I had a fabulous opportunity to learn about Chinese Art both hands on and via classroom studies recently in March. The course was entitled ‘Connoisseurship Chinese Art Course: Listening to the Object” in honor of Asia Art Week, which occurred March 17-19 in New York City, and was sponsored by the International Society of Appraisers. It was lead by my friend and colleague Susan Lahey, ISA AM. We did classroom studies and tours of museums, auction house sales exhibitions, all while earning continuing education credits.
On-site studies of Chinese Art at Sotheby’s included a hands-on review of two Asian Art exhibitions at Sotheby’s including – “Kangxi: The Jie Rui Tang Collection Part II” March 19th, from the Jeffrey Staman Collection.
Cynthia Volk, the Sotheby’s Senior Specialist did a wonderfully informative walk-about and spoke on the ceramics in the collection.
One of the notable highlights from the Jeffrey Staman Kangxi collection is the large inscribed Famille-Verte Brushpot, depicting a Tang dynasty poet-scholar leaning against the railing of a pavilion, pictured to the left.
Another highlight is the lovely and very large Famille-Verte ‘Banquet’ dish, pictured below.
Below is the group at Christie’s posing with a rare Famille Rose turquoise-ground vase.
There was also a hands-on lecture with Hannah Thompson, the Senior Sotheby’s Researcher of the Robert Youngman Collection of Chinese Jade.
An example of some of the Jade pieces in the Youngman Collection is to the left, a yellow jade ‘Boys and Cat’ group.
Some of the other seminars involved learning about Chinese Bronzes, Textiles, and Snuff Bottles, as well as Symbolism, Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism.
I also had the pleasure of witnessing the live Sotheby’s and Christie’s auction of all the pieces pictured in this post. An indescribable moment!
