Finley’s Art World Spotlight: Design Miami, 2023

Design Miami, 2023: December 8-10, Convention Center Drive, Across from Art Basel

I always enjoy taking a break from Art Basel to focus on International Contemporary Design at Design Miami.

Don’t miss one of my favorite galleries, Ippodo Gallery from Tokyo and New York. Jesee Gross, Gallery Associate, is so knowledgeable! Some of my favorite highlights from the gallery are Hajime and Yasuo Ishikura, two Japanese brothers who have pioneered the art of superb iron molding.

Another artist spotlight is Kaku, who utilizes a unique approach with Japanese washi paper from mulberry bark, wire, and paint. One of his works can be seen displayed just below (D) Candle Stand, 2022. Each piece is made by hand with coiled wire wrapped around washi paper slips and finished off with acrylic paint. The final product imitates leaves and shells. Another highlight was Laura de Santillana, a contemporary Italian glass artist from Venice and hails from the Venini family of glass artists.
